Speakers in presidential systems
Where the executive is separately elected, the presiding officer is often a party leader chosen by the majority, and terms may be shorter than the legislature's.
- Article I, Section 2 of the US Constitution provides that the House of Representatives "shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers".1
- Under Article VI, Section 16 of the Philippine Constitution, the House elects its Speaker by a majority vote of all its Members.2
- Brazil's Constitution sets a two year term for each House's Executive Committee and prohibits re-election to the same post in the immediately following election.3
- South Korea's National Assembly elects a Speaker for each half of its four year term. The Speaker elected in June 2026 serves until May 2028.4
- In Mexico, the President of the Chamber of Deputies is elected for one year of the three year legislature.5
