How the office holder is chosen
Section 44 of the Constitution Act, 1867 requires the House of Commons, at its first meeting, to elect one of its members to be Speaker, and section 45 requires a new election if the office falls vacant. In May 2025 members voted by preferential secret ballot, run by the longest serving MP, Louis Plamondon, according to The Canadian Press.2,3
Term
The Speaker is elected for the life of a Parliament. IPU Parline lists the Speaker's term as 4 years. Under section 49, the Speaker votes only when the votes are equal.1,2
